REVIEWS
Something out of the ordinary has been fulfilled. It does not quite fit into the narrative of literary normalcy, nevertheless, it is worth reading, and reflecting upon. Literature is sometimes like physics with laws and common principles of scholarly understandings, but unlike physics, literature is very much subjective and diverse. And in this literary work, Prince has subjectively - with craft-presented to us a drama – play - worth looking at with curious glance.
In a 21st century world of diversity, literature is surely going to be unhinged in defying stereotypes, and “Ghost of Sparta” by Prince is among the first writings to test the waters and push the boundaries, beyond African settings and cosmologies. It is perhaps a taboo, but young, talented, restless and inquisitive minds like Prince Ezeabata Chibuzor are stretching the literary narrative from the confines of a writer’s cultural heritage. “Ghost of Sparta” may come as a surprise to you, for fact that it is written by a young budding Nigerian writer, who focused on a culture and narrative alien to him and Africa, but if you have read literary classics, your shock should dissipate to amazement. A bold daring step has been taken and Prince Ezeabata Chibuzor has broken that edge by writing on a culture not of Africa, as pure and it is.
“Ghost of Sparta” centers around the polity of Greece based on the writer’s imaginative and dynamic concept of the Spartan people, as a dramatic piece of fiction, the historical context is not just the focus, but the playwright’s ability to weave a story based on a culture alien to him, with such accuracy of figures, description, characters and setting as dated beyond 400B.C.
Prince Ezeabata Chibuzor’s foray into the uncommon is a testing of the waters, which unmasked his cunning ability to write. He may or may not draft another work of art exploring issues beyond his cultural space, but with the “Ghost of Sparta”, Prince has shown that he is an innovative writer, and that whenever he writes on the African sensibility, he is fit to continue the legacy of legendary and respected African writers in preserving the literary legacy of Africa’s culture. He has broken the edge and created an impression. We hope to see Prince write on African literature – which obviously he will – but for now, let’s enjoy this beautiful anomaly, “Ghost of Sparta”.

“Ghost of Sparta” ironically synopsized the bad governance in Nigeria and other African nations. This is indeed, an eye-opener to the people and a call for change on the leaders.

Prince Ezeabata Chibuzors’ Ghost of Sparta is a fictional dramatic work set in the Spartan City
state of Greece. The play portrays a dictatorship rule with Prytanis at the helm of affairs. He creatively painted an exact image of the Sparta system of Government, geography, location,
and used characters like Prytanis, Lycurgus and General Lysander who had similar role in
historical records.
