A number of newsworthy developments happened on the campus of the University of Abuja last week.

The Association of Creative Writers Press Club brings the students populace flash news:

Matriculation ceremony postponed, reason unstated

The management of the university postponed the matriculation ceremony earlier slated for Friday, 15th March.

However, the reason for postponement at the last minute was unknown.

In a post on the University’s Facebook page, the management said “a new date will be communicated soon.”

“We regret  to inform our  students and the general public that the UofA  2023/2024 Matriculation Ceremony,  earlier scheduled to hold tomorrow, Friday 15th March  2024, has been postponed.”

Unlawful imposition of levies

The University Senate last week reiterated the order that no Association, Union or Club “shall charge more than One Thousand Naira”.

The Senate in a memo signed by the Dean, Student Affairs Division, A. G. Umar Kari, Ph.D. stressed that the order is still in force.

The released memo reads: “It has come to our attention that in clear breach and defiance of directive of the University Senate, some Associations, Unions and Clubs are still charging sundry fees under different guises. 100 level students and other freshers in particular are the main target.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the decision of the Senate is that no Association, Union or Club shall charge more than One Thousand Naira (N1,000) as fee/levy per member per session. The decision remains in force.”

The memo also stated that defaulting Association, Union and Club will be summoned before the Students Disciplinary Committee.

“The Safety Division has been compiling the list of violators, and all those involved will soon appear before the Students Disciplinary Committee. So, be warned, please.”

Two months after launch, bicycles available for students

More than two months after the management launched the ‘Na’Allah Campus Ride’, a scheme to ease students' movement on campus by renting bicycles for them, bicycles have become available.

Last month, the rental prices for the bicycles have been added to the student portal.

ACW-UA Press Club had reported that, under the payment section where prices are displayed, the price of rent per month is N9,000, while the price per semester is N27,000, and the weekly rent price is N2,100.

A release from the Office of the Director of Information & Communications, Students Union Government disclosed that bicycles are now available at the security unit at the school gate on Friday.

The release was signed by SUG Director of Information, Okeke Ikedichukwu.

It reads: “We are pleased to announce to the student community that the bicycle for students is ready for pick-up today, and the  first 50 students that will pick the bike will get it for free. Those who are interested should get to the security post at the gate.

“You are, however, responsible for the security and maintenance of the bike. There are bike sheds all around the school to secure your bike. Get the key along with the bike.”
