POLITICS: Elcom Commences Sale of SRA Form, Plans Hybrid Elections

The Electoral Committee of the University of Abuja has commenced the selling of form for the Students Representative Assembly election.
The Committee noted that the elections will be conducted via online and offline.
According to releases, interested students can pick up the form at the Students Union Government secretariat at the Mini Campus, Gwagwalada.
“The Students' Representative Assembly (SRA) forms will continue to be sold today, 17th March 2024, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the SUG Secretariat, Mini Campus. This is an opportunity for interested students to participate in the
upcoming SRA elections.”
In a separate memo, Elcom disclosed eligibility criteria for aspiring contestants.
The release reads: “Anyone contesting for the post of president, vice president, general secretary, speaker, or deputy speaker must have a minimum Current C.G.P.A. of not less than 3.00.
A minimum Current C.G.P. A. of 2.50 and above is for all other cabinet positions and membership of the SRA.
“The posts of president, vice president, speaker, deputy speaker, and clerk are open to only those who have spent at least two academic sessions in the university.
“Students' Union leadership shall only be open to students with sterling qualities, good leadership traits, past records of good behaviour, and who have never been indicted for any wrongdoing or are undergoing disciplinary process. Therefore,
only those who pass security checks by the University Safety Unit and relevant security agencies will be eligible to contest
for any students' nion position.”
The committee also disclosed the procedure for the conduct of the elections.
“The mode for alelections shall be online voting for faculty S. R. A Position's and Manual, open secret balloting for hostel's S. R. A Position's and cabinet post's.
“All posts shall be contested for independently.
Each voter shall be entitled to only one vote for each election. Election into the SRA shall be open to all members of the Union who have satisfied the provisions of this Constitution.
“Without prejudice to the votes cast, where the number of candidate(s) contesting for: SRA seats doesn't not exceed the allocated a number of seats for such a constituency, the candidates shall be deemed to have been electec
unopposed. Voting shall, however, proceed and results declared.
“In any election, the candidate with the highest number of votes cast (i.e., simple majority) shall be declared the winner.”
