Inside story: UniAbuja student dies during sign-out celebration

Inside story: UniAbuja student dies during sign-out celebration

ACW-UA Correspondent, Quadri Yahya

A student in the Department of Chemistry, University of Abuja, identified as Michael (a.k.a Angello) died Tuesday during the sign-out celebration after his final examination.

The incident happened around the Gwagwalada area during a ‘car drifting’ drill the deceased and other final-year students engaged in.

According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased and another student were sitting on top of a car booth when the incident occurred. There were more than two cars, eyewitnesses say.

The two students were said to have fallen off the booth of the speeding car when the late Micheal hit his head on the ground, while the other student barely had an injury scratch.

Reports stated that the driver of the car and eyewitnesses rushed the deceased to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital where he was later pronounced dead some hours later.

ACW gathered that the deceased had been moved to the mortuary yesterday (Tuesday).

Matters Arising

After the unfortunate incident, there have been speculations among students that the school management has banned sign-out celebrations.

However, in a statement signed by the Director of Information, Students' Union Government, Okeke Ikedichukwu dismissed the false information.

Ikedichukwu said the management has not imposed a ban on the sign-out ceremony yet.

“I want to clarify that signout is not banned (on) campus”, the statement reads.

“As signout (celebration) approaches, we understand that many of you are excited to celebrate this milestone. However, we kindly request that you celebrate responsibly and be mindful of your actions.”
