A HISTORIC MOVE AS 24 WOMEN CONTEST FOR GOVERNORSHIP IN NIGERIA’S ELECTIONS

Dominic Izuchukwu Nwobodo

President, ACWUA

In what can only be described as a historic move, 24 women have thrown their hats into the ring to contest for governorship positions in Nigeria's upcoming elections. This is a significant increase from the previous elections where the number of female governorship candidates was considerably lower.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), there are a total of 36 states in Nigeria, and for the first time in the country's history, women are contesting in almost two-thirds of the states. This is a clear indication that women are breaking barriers and challenging the status quo in a traditionally male-dominated arena.

The women candidates come from diverse backgrounds, including business, politics, and civil society, and are contesting on different party platforms. Their candidacy has been widely welcomed and is seen as a significant step towards achieving gender parity in Nigeria's political landscape.

Although Nigeria has made some progress in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment, the country still lags behind in many areas. Women are often marginalized in politics and face significant barriers to their participation in decision-making processes. The increased number of women candidates for governorship is, therefore, a positive development that could have a significant impact on the country's political and social landscape.

It is hoped that this trend will continue, and more women will be encouraged to participate in politics and vie for leadership positions in Nigeria. The election of more women into leadership positions could bring about positive changes in the country, including greater representation and a more inclusive political process.

As Nigeria prepares for its upcoming elections, it is clear that the presence of 24 women contesting for governorship positions is a significant milestone. This historic move is a step towards achieving gender equality and empowering women to take their place in leadership positions, and it is hoped that it will inspire more women to follow in their footsteps in the years to come.
