ALARMING UNCOVERING: University of Abuja Student Union (SRA/SUG) Faces Allegations of Unconstitutional Amendment and attempt to bar student democratic right.

In a shocking revelation, the Student Representatives Assembly (SRA) / Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Abuja is under scrutiny due to serious allegations of arbitrary and unconstitutional attempts to amend its constitution. The startling claims, brought to light in a petition filed under the inherent jurisdiction of the Student Judiciary Council, have sparked concerns over the integrity of the upcoming SUG elections.

The petition, presented by the Coalition of Concerned Students, has raised red flags regarding a clandestine attempt by certain Student Representatives Council (SRA) members, including the Speaker of the Parliament, to introduce an amendment clause to the SUG Constitution. What's more, these amendments were executed without the required approval of two-thirds majority of SRA members, thereby casting doubts on the fairness and transparency of the process.

The petition further questions the reason for the dis-involvement of key university authorities, such as the Dean of Student Affairs, the University Senate, and the Chief Security Officer, who were allegedly kept in the dark about this questionable amendment. Such a lack of awareness may render the entire process null and void under the SUG Constitution.

Moreover, the Coalition of Concerned Students has identified certain SRA members allegedly involved in this constitutional irregularity, raising serious questions about their motives and intentions. These students' actions not only violate the democratic values we cherish but also pose a significant threat to the credibility and legitimacy of the SUG's governance.

Prince Ezeabata Chibuzor a concerned student and spokesperson for the Coalition of Concerned Students, emphasized the gravity of the situation and the urgency of a thorough investigation. "We cannot stand idly by while the essence of democracy is undermined within our university community. We demand justice and accountability for those involved in this reprehensible act," he asserted.

The Student Judiciary Council, in addition to the office of the Dean Student Affairs, and Secretary Unit renowned for upholding law and order on campus, is now tasked with reviewing the petition and the evidence provided. The outcome of this investigation could have far-reaching consequences on the credibility of the upcoming SUG elections and the trust students place in their representatives.

As the university community eagerly awaits the results of the investigation, national and regional student bodies, including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Nigerian Universities' Administration Students (NAUS), have expressed their solidarity with the students of the University of Abuja. The call for transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles resonates across the higher education landscape.

The university administration, taking cognizance of the gravity of the situation, assures all students and stakeholders of a fair and impartial inquiry into the matter. As events unfold, the university community will receive regular updates on the progress and actions taken to address the allegations.

In the spirit of transparency and open dialogue, the Coalition of Concerned Students urges all parties involved to cooperate fully with the Dean Student Affairs, Security Unit and Student Judiciary Council's investigation and ensure the truth prevails.

The eyes of the nation are on the University of Abuja as it confronts this critical juncture in its commitment to democratic ideals and ethical governance.
