The University of Abuja held its matriculation ceremony on Tuesday, 25th July, 2023, welcoming over 3000 new students to the university community. In interviews with the ACW-UA press, the new students shared their goals and expectations for their time at the University of Abuja.

In an interview with an Engineering student, he expressed his pain:

"Uniabuja is not for the weak. The stress of going to classes early in the morning and later the class would be canceled, trekking from one place to another looking for lecture venue, lecturers rushing people without giving a damn…sitting on the floor which you’ve never done even in your secondary school. There’s nothing fun and entertaining about the school.”

A medical student added that:

“Uniabuja is stressful wallahi but it's also fun at some point though. But then the lecturers are also trying to some extent honestly but some, they are not even making efforts to help the situation. For the courses, the only problem for me and most students is definitely PHY 101 and STA 101 though the lecturers are trying their best actually, but the courses are just soo overbearing.”

Another matriculating student from the English Department said;

“Well... starting this semester, I was kinda excited and nervous that I wouldn't meet up with the lectures cause they had gone far but after a month or so, I began to cope and understand the courses. Meeting a whole lot of people, and making some friends, here and there. Hmm, let's say the lecturers are amazing and while I'm adjusting to how they lecture, some courses are giving me headaches (phonetics and phonology) but I think I’ll meet up with it soon. Thank you.”

When a History and Diplomatic Studies student was asked how he felt about being matriculated, he answered that he felt excited. He added that he found himself in a country where admission was hard to get but after attempting five times, he finally got admission. He was also asked if he got the course he applied for and he said he applied for law as his first choice and history and diplomatic studies as his second choice so either way they gave him what he wanted.

When asked how he felt about the institution before and after, he said he has been anticipating being an undergraduate and that nothing comes easy. He had already said to himself that he is ready for whatever comes his way.

Two political science students were also interviewed: They both declared that they felt excited and great about being students of the great University.

They both added that they thought it’d be easy but getting in, it was a whole different thing for them. They however hope that God would help them during the course of their stay.

The new students also spoke about their hopes for the future. They said they wanted to use their education to make a difference in the world. Some of the students said they wanted to become doctors, lawyers, or engineers. Others said they wanted to start their own businesses or work in government.

The matriculation ceremony was a joyous occasion, and the new students were clearly eager to begin their journey at the University of Abuja. The interviews with ACW-UA press gave the students a chance to share their hopes and dreams for the future, and they highlighted the excitement and potential of the new class.
