From White Shirts to Colourful Memories: University of Abuja's Graduating Class of 2022 Embraces Sign-Out Tradition

The University of Abuja has witnessed a week-long celebration as final year students from various departments and faculties participate in the traditional sign-out custom.

The graduating class of 2022 has marked their final exams by wearing white shirts, which were then adorned with various colours and inscriptions by friends, family, and colleagues.

The graduating class had a difficult time due to the eight-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which delayed their graduation.

They were originally supposed to graduate last year, but the delay resulted in their graduation ceremony taking place in April 2023. The next set of students is expected to graduate in December of this year.

One of the graduating students, Chinonso Okoro, shared her excitement about the sign-out tradition, saying, "It's amazing to be able to celebrate the end of a long journey with friends and family. Seeing everyone write kind words and messages on my shirt made me feel so loved and appreciated."
Another graduating student, Ibrahim Yusuf, spoke about the difficulties of completing his degree during the ASUU strike. "It was a challenging time for all of us, but I'm grateful for the support of my friends and family who helped me stay motivated throughout the process," he said.

The sign-out custom is a long-standing tradition at the University of Abuja, and it serves as a symbolic way for students to mark the end of their academic journey.

This year's graduating class was exception, as they showed their joy and excitement by taking pictures and videos, and celebrating with their loved ones.
In an interview with ACW-UA PRESS, the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Umar A. Kari, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the sign-out tradition. He said, "It's always a joy to see our students complete their academic journey and move on to the next chapter of their lives. We are proud of our graduating class of 2022 and wish them all the best in their future endeavours."

The sign-out tradition has become a significant part of the University of Abuja's culture, as it signifies the end of a chapter for final year students and the beginning of a new one.

It is a time for celebration and reflection, and it marks the beginning of a new journey for these students.

As the graduating class of 2022 moves on to the next phase of their lives, they do so with a sense of pride and accomplishment. They are now equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their chosen careers and make meaningful contributions to society.
