Information reached the Student Body yesterday about the sudden dissolution of the Student Union Government - Executive Committee, Student Representative Assembly and the Judicial Committee - by the University Management headed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulrasheed Na'Allah.
This was made known in a circular signed by the Registrar, Yahya I. Mohammed on Friday, 26th of March 2021 with the Subject ; Dissolution of Student Union Government.
According to the circular, the reason for the dissolution of the Student Union Government borders on an overstay of tenure in Office. The Student Union Government was elected on September 2019 and it has overstayed its tenure in Office.
Consequently, a Caretaker Committee is to be constituted to run the affairs of the Union. The Caretaker Committee is expected to comprise of representatives from all Faculties.
However, the majority of the Student Community received this development with uncertainty, displeasure and sadness. Majority who spoke with us expressed their grievances to this development. Many are of the belief that, there is more to this than tenure elapse.
It should be remembered that the SUG Executive Committee lead by Comr.Oladoja Habeeb Olawale, the defunct SUG President, staged a peaceful protest on the 1st Day of February, 2021 demanding a five point interest :
1. Re-Opening and Extension of School Fee Portal Till the End of Session.
2. No Late Payment of any Registration Fee Including Add and Drop.
3. Reviewing of School Fees Charges Ahead of Next Session And Reviewing of College of Health Science Fees For Current Session.
4. Postponement of First Semester Exam Date Till 8th of March, 2021.
This sparked series of discussions, deliberations and topics at various Televisions and Radio stations in the FCT.
Recently, the Student Representative Assembly in a couple of circulars signed by the Hon. Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Badom Fortune and attested by the Clerk of the House, Rt. Hon. David Igomu with the Subjects ; THE SUSPENSION OF THE SUG PRESIDENT and THE SUSPENSION OF THE SUG SECRETARY GENERAL on the 25th day of March, 2021 for the breach of Article 10 (I) of the Supreme Constitution of the Student Union Government, openly declared that the President and Secretary General of the Student Union Government have been suspended and restricted from carrying out the duties that they were previously saddled with, as executives of the SUG. This came before the Dissolution of the SUG.
Apparently, while some point accusing fingers on the Student Representative Assembly, the SRA has confirmed that they have no play in the dissolution of the Student Union Government.
Notwithstanding, some are of the opinion that this will lead to a more peaceful transition of power, as the Caretaker Committee will accelerate a better and renewed Student Union Government in no farther time.
