ACW-UA PRESS : UNIABUJA Students laments on the dangers of the road between Boys Hostel and school field. Mini Campus

Why wait until the worst happen.

By : Prince Ezeabata Chibuzor

Have we forgotten so soon the resilient words of our elders, "you look for a black goat before the night falls". Perhaps, we have given up on our proverbs and wise saying. However, let me also aver your mind to remember that, "you flush out the flooding water when it's at the heel before it rises to the chest". I asked myself, is it that we don't see and perceive the lanking danger or are we waiting till we sit in our blossom and hear the sad tale of telling lips?

My heart raced and sanked into my mouth. Perspiration glides down my pounding chest and my limps shakes in fright. "sorry o. hope say you no wound?" I heard around me. A car almost run over me, just on a hopeful morning, well dressed, with the mind of sitting at Indoor Theater to receive a  Lecture on SOC202, only to cross the road between the boy hostel and the school field at mini campus, I had almost seen my death, perhaps I won't be here giving this report. This is one among the sad reports of students who had encountered danger while crossing that road.

One will be interested to know which road I mean. Very well, it is not akin to us that the road leading from Mega Screen down to Customs Staff College, gwagwalada, between the boys hostel and the school field mini campus is a danger zone. Students every moment finds it an adventurous way to cross, striving to avoid the ruthless ride and drive of motorcycles and vehicles which race finds pleasure running uncautiously, coupled with the fact that that road has become a refuse dump for local mai-bola thereby constituting not only physical hazard but environmental and health hazard.

I wonder what actually is constraining the school management from building speedbumps on that road. I thought we were taught to be proactive and precautious, in reality however, it is playing that we are actually waiting till we hear that a student has been knocked down by a vehicle or rather someone lynched for knocking a student, till then perhaps we might take due cause of action. It is said that, it's too late to cry when the head is off.  Should we actually wait until something happens, until our head is off before we do the expected. What useful notion  would it rather make if until the worst happens before we take active measures. It is hilarious and laughable if that's what it is.
Now is the high time, for tomorrow maybe too late. The writing on the wall should be enough to signal us of the empending danger. Imperatively, I urge the response of the management of the University, the relevant authority and Students Union Welfare to be on their feet to tackle this ticking clock of catastrophe before its running hand stops. One can not overemphasiz the cruciality of Speedbreaker in that way and the put to stop to the environmental hazard melted down on that way. May we not search for tears when the head is off.
