The Off-key Transition

Background of the collaborative poem from the ACW-UA POETRY Department

On Wednesday 5th June, 2024, the first ever collaborative poem documentation in ACW-UA poetry department for the semester was led by the Head of ACW-UA Poetry department, Frederick Goodness Amarachi with aid from her assistant, Mbanefo Annmaria Ifechukwude.

It was titled “THE OFF-KEY TRANSITION”  in line with the national anthem saga, as Nigeria’s anthem transited back to it's anthem composed by the military government whilst practicing democracy. The poets in the department gathered together to make magic happen by joining creative forces to carve out a masterpiece by merging their ides to show their judgement on the matter.

Below is the said poem;

THE OFF-KEY TRANSITION

Nigeria, we hail thee!

Are you my motherland or my fathers?

Indeed a beautiful verse!

But how exactly does this help Nigeria get her daily bread?

Our feets dances to the lullaby of the anthem,

Our mouth yearn for daily bread,

Words of whispers promising brotherhood,

Only to soar away with the wind.

Confusion and Criticism filled the air,

What a pierce!

With Denizens at the mercies of insecurities.

The hunger in the bellies of the young ones questions if it was famine?

Furies kick their foot against our aimless youths.

The sun no more a guiding light for these blooming plants struggles with sweat,

Survival!

The notes are like daggers that pierce through my soul,

As I struggle to find my way through this hole.

In our motherland, a place filled with great resources we suffer great lack!

Africa's largest economy waging wars for increased minimum wage!

Led by blunt minded fellows,

While the intellects are left in the gallows.

Though the rhythm of these notes no longer flow,

In empty words, we still seek hope.
