 Breaking: UniAbuja increases hostel fee

Quadri Yahya

The management of the University of Abuja has increased hostel accommodation fees for its students.

The increment was revealed in an email sent to the students on Monday, and signed by the Dean of Students` Affairs  A. G. Umar Kari.

According to the notice sent to the students via email, the fee for the new and old male and female hostels at the main campus is N40,000 and N25,000 respectively, while the fee for the hostel at the mini-campus is N20,000.

ACW PRESS reports that, before the increment, the fees for the hostels – new and old at the main campus, were  N25,000 and N15,000 respectively, while students were charged N10,000 only for the hostels at the mini-campus hostels.

On the other hand, the hostel fees for international students – foreigners and Nigerians – were pegged at N100,000 and N75,000, respectively. The hostel fee for postgraduate students is N300,000.

ACW Press gathered that the accommodation portal will be opened on Thursday,  Thursday 18th January. “There will be daily updates on the process until the exercise is completed”, the notice stated.

ACW Press recalls that the hostel buildings were reportedly renovated when the students were on session break.

ACW Press further reports that the management noted that bed space is limited, adding that hostel accommodation ‘is not a right’.

The notice further reads, “Only those who have duly paid their school fees and other charges can access the portal.

“The range of fees per bed space for the different hostels is as follows:

“It is very important to note that very limited bed spaces are available (just over 6,000) and there are more of them at the Mini Campus (3,200), hence allocation will be strictly on a first-come-first-serve basis. It is equally important to note that hostel accommodation IS NOT A RIGHT, and that the University is not obliged to house every student in the hostels. Therefore, those who cannot secure bed spaces in the hostels would have to make alternative arrangements off-campus.

“However, the Transport Unit of the University has made proper and adequate arrangements to ensure smooth, seamless and painless inter-campus bus shuttle services, now that virtually all the Faculties have relocated to the Main Campus. Students can, therefore, stay at the Mini Campus hostels but conduct their academic activities at the Main Campus without problems.”

The management also disclosed that “squatting and illegal stay in campus [hostel] (under whatever guises or pretexts) are absolutely prohibited. Perpetrators will sooner or later be fished out and ejected out of the hostels, while those hosting them will automatically lose their bed spaces (in addition to other punishment as approved by the Senate). Swapping of bed spaces/and or hostel allocation will no longer be allowed (therefore, be very careful and sure of the preferred hostel you are choosing)  and contravention of this will lead to automatic forfeiture of the spaces for those involved. Even more importantly, the sale of bed space is a Gross Misconduct punishable with Expulsion!

“There will be zero tolerance for all acts and omissions that inhibit decent, hygienic and civilized stay on campus. Accordingly, on the portal, those applying for hostel accommodation MUST first enter into and accept an undertaking to abide by all the rules and regulations governing their tenancy of the hostels.

“It is equally important to advise those desirous of hostel accommodation to be wary of and guard against fraudsters. The allocation process is strictly electronic (through the portal) and no cash payment is involved. There will be no proxies, no use of coupon or payment to an individual

or any account – not even through Remita. Accommodation fees are simply paid through the applicant’s personal portal account!”
